Thanks to a generous donation by Simmons & Simmons as part of their annual carbon offset, school children in the Lewes area are now understanding more about the solar energy that is powering their schools through an innovative adaptation of traditional solar display screens.

Community Energy group, OVESCO utilised Simmons & Simmons donation, facilitated by Pure Leapfrog, to children better understand the value of the solar panels installed at their school. With the assistance of a systems developer, pioneering code was written to connect the meter readings via API links from the solar generation and the school’s electricity consumption. The display panels then show a set of slides listing solar generation, along with the school’s own electricity consumption and additional slides from the school.
At St John’s Brighton, a school for children with special needs, OVESCO installed two display screens. OVESCO worked closely with the teaching staff and children to select the ‘widgets’ that link images with words – hence the headline above: “Clean electricity from the sun”. For St John’s, the key messages are simply about what uses electricity and the activities of their ‘Green Club’ – ‘How can we save electricity?’

At King’s Academy Ringmer, their theme concerns climate change, an animation about how solar panels work, the activities of the ‘Eco Team’ as well as slides showing the school’s solar generation and grid consumption.
This great initiative would not have been possible without the support of Simmons & Simmons and Pure Leapfrog.
